Athena’s Outpatient Care: One-On-One Therapy Sessions at Active Physical Therapy & Wellness
WILBRAHAM, M.A. — It’s a small center, but the physical therapists at Active Physical Therapy & Wellness say that’s what stands out.
Located in the clubhouse at The Gardens of Wilbraham active adult condo community in Wilbraham, Massachusetts, Active has three staff members: a receptionist and two physical therapists. Kim Condon and Rose Wrona, who also serves as the Clinical Director, pride themselves on 45-minute to an hour-long sessions with patients and staying with that patient throughout their recovery journey.
“When I interviewed for this job, it was a no-brainer because it was more time spent with each patient, one on one, actually be able to see them from beginning to end and not have to juggle a multitude of patients which gives better outcomes and better care in my opinion,” Condon, who has been at Active for 10 months, said.
Compared to a rehabilitation center at a nursing facility, Active is primarily orthopedic. The team at Active can treat conditions and injuries including, but not limited to:
- Sport Injuries
- Back and Neck Pain
- Post-Surgical
- Hip/Knee Replacement Therapy
- Shoulder Injuries
- Rotator Cuff Injuries
- Post-Acute Stroke Rehabilitation
- Hip, Knee, and Ankle Injuries
- Headaches
- Auto and Work-Related Injuries
- Arthritis
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
- Chronic Pain
- Hand and Wrist Injuries
- Elbow Injuries
“We go over their past medical history, their history of their current condition, how long it’s been, where it hurts, what is their functional limitation because of this problem, what their perspective of the problem is, and what their perceived outcome is,” Wrona said.
Wrona has been at Active for five years. She’s from Enfield, Connecticut and attended Springfield College for physical therapy. She’s been in the industry for 28 years now. As the Clinical Director, she manages all the business happenings. While located in a 55+ community, Active accepts all patients. Wrona said they’ll work on students and athletes frequently.
“The majority of our patients really aren’t residents of The Gardens. They’re just residents of Wilbraham, Ledlow, the surrounding area, and it’s taken off in the last 5 years… it’s word of mouth,” she said.
Wrona said they view patients’ needs as a whole body instead of a body part.
Having more than 30 years of experience in physical therapy, Condon said the 45-minute to hour-long sessions they book give more hands-on time for patients. She said that can help them find the hidden issues that may be causing the problems.
“A lot of times the patients will come here because they didn’t do so well at different facilities or they didn’t like the fact that they had to be juggled between two or three different therapists. Just the quality and the time spent is huge,” she said.
The two say the whole reason they do this job is to see the successful recoveries of patients who walked through the door with an injury and walked out a better person.
